The plan was a quick nap and a parade of dragon floats. The dragons beat us to it. Up the stairs from the subway we met hordes of people. They were pushed up against bars, minded by cops, holding digital cameras above their heads, capturing photos of strangers’ scalps.
I wanted to find my hostel. The entrance was barricaded by the crowd. An elderly woman shot me a glare. No way I would put foot on her elevated stair. Skip round to the side entrance. No Rolex, sir, no SIM card, no thank-you.
Led down the hallway to the smallest single room. Back down to street level, nothing of a parade to be seen. Walk down to the waterfront to the Avenue of the Stars. Push past fellow tourists to snap a photo of the statue of Mr. Jackie Chan.
Back to the hostel after a trip to the corner store. Chips, a sandwich, and Egypt Newsweek, happy to have an English read. Resolve to rest sore feet and do absolutely nothing.
Even on vacation, sometimes it’s nice to stay in.
